Witness my infinite nerdiness
Sep. 10th, 2008 10:50 am*Disclaimer: All songs posted are for sample purposes only and not intended to infringe on the rights of any of these artists making money off of said songs. If by some remote chance someone important stumbles upon this horrifically nerdy post and wants a particular song removed, I will remove it immediately. I wouldn't waste time taking legal action against me as I have no money.*
So this conversation happened, and now this post is happening, in which I post snippets of my various playlists for (oh God I am so nerdy) public consumption and ridicule.
A little backstory - I started putting these playlists together when it became clear I was getting serious about writing TEF. Certain songs would lodge in my brain and I'd start attributing them to couples or specific scenes, and so I started putting playlists together primarily as a writing aid. Whenever I feel like writing a specific couple, I put that playlist on as background noise. The lists aren't necessary built around lyrics all of the time, some of it also has to do with the general vibe I get from the song and how it relates to the couple. Actually, that's how like half of my "Fight" playlist is built up of j-pop/rock songs, yes it is my guilty pleasure don't judge me D:
Anyway. I've got five playlists total that I cycle through for TEF. One for the Blues, one for the Greens, two for the Reds (one of which I won't share anything from until after TEF starts getting posted as the nature of the songs right now would CONFUSE EVERYBODY and also potentially spoil some things if you managed to get past the confusion), and one for Fighting. Is this kinda nerdy? I think it's kinda A LOT nerdy. Obviously this post will give significant insight into my taste in music which many may construe as terrible. Whatever, don't judge me and my strange affinity for power pop, electro pop, j-pop, and the phenomenally vague alt rock umbrella! ♥ electro-pop!
But here! I've picked out a small handful of the least embarrassing songs from each playlist to shaaaaare. Justifications included wherever I felt the need to defend my nerdiness.
juxtaposie, look at what you have WROUGHT.
The Blues:
If I Had A Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies
Even Fairytale Characters Would Be Jealous - PlayRadioPlay!
Here in Your Arms - hellogoodbye
Lucky (feat. Colbie Caillat) - Jason Mraz
Originally I was only going to post the first three, but then was like WAIT, they are all Boomer to Bubbles and that is not balanced (though I completely ignored that w/Butch and Buttercup below). Then I threw Lucky up there becauseI love Mraz while I wouldn't make it a definition of their relationship per se, there's sort of a simple beauty to the lyrics and the harmony that gets across that unity in the relationship. PlayRadioPlay!'s and hellogoodbye's songs are obviously boy's inner feelings/turmoil (YES I SEE TURMOIL THERE), while Barenaked Ladies is all about his totally relaxed and unserious funny-man personality to me.
The Greens:
Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis
Aquellos Ojos Verdes - Nat King Cole
For the Girl - The Fratellis
Ah, I love the Fratellis. I should've titled these the "Odes to Buttercup" list. Chelsea Dagger plays out like a fight between the two in my head as well as a semi-lust-ode to Buttercup ("when you dance in slowly sucking your sleeve the boys get lonely after you leave?" Hell YES). It ties back to that meme thing I did (Buttercup is completely oblivious to boys possessing any sexual desire for her at all). Aquellos Ojos Verdes, despite Cole's terrible Spanish pronunciation, produces this great juxtaposition for me, where the song is really soothing and beautiful and yet really here it's about the not-very-sane Butch thirsting for a fight w/Buttercup. Read the lyrics for yourself and tell me I'm not crazy :D For the Girl is just... the vibe is very upbeat and battle-y, right, but if you listen to the lyrics it's actually a really tragic song. That one's like the definitive song for this couple for me.
Brick:
You Know My Name - Chris Cornell
Once in a Lifetime - Bobby Darin
Okay, I cheated with this one. I don't actually have a Brick playlist. But these two (from the Fight playlist) are totally Brick's. Yes, I put a James Bond song up. I'm not ashamed.Okay, maybe just a little bit. But no. Listen to the lyrics. It's pretty much Brick being a badass. Once in a Lifetime shows you just how much I like putting pretty music to very not pretty things (see Aquellos Ojos Verdes?). This started out as an anthem for the boys, but clearly notched itself in my brain as a much more appropriate Brick anthem.
The Reds:
Sideways - Let's Go Sailing
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - John Mayer
One More Night - Stars
Good Man - Third Eye Blind
Tune the Rainbow - Sakamoto Maaya
Alright, stop laughing at me now. I knew this would be the couple to do me in, so I'll wait for you to stop. The Reds have the longest playlist on my mp3 drive. There is just so much drama. There's no way I'm posting all the emo tracks that are on this list (it would take me days to upload them anyway). If you laugh, I want to see laughter posted in the comments, btw, right next to all the WTF IS JOHN MAYER DOING HERE comments. Obviously this couple is the "tragic" couple, and on this list there are more songs than on any other playlist where the lyrics actually apply to their relationship (yes, even the one in Japanese). Sideways is about the hesitation ("I have no problems dipping in my feet But the trouble comes when I have to jump") throughout, Slow Dancing - come on, the title ALONE is the very definition of their relationship! One More Night is all about the regret, oh God this is such a tragic song, just listen to it, it puts me in tears (Stars is AMAZING). Good Man is the one song you must download if you didn't plan on downloading any of these. The only weird thing is that it's a double track; Good Man was the last song listed on the album and a secret song was included, but wasn't made a separate track. So ignore that song that follows and just listen to Good Man. It's the love song to Blossom that Brick will never send her. As for Tune the Rainbow, it actually doesn't apply to TEF at all, but the song itself has a very bittersweet, gorgeous melody, and I was shocked to discover how well I felt the lyrics fit them ("The soft song of love cannot reach us"). It's the Reds song the girly estrogen in me cries out for. I have other plans for this song that will probably manifest themselves around Christmas.
Fight Mix:
Come Out and Play (Keep 'em Separated) - Offspring
Right Now - SR-71
Evolution - Hamasaki Ayumi
Joint - Mami Kawada of I'VE
As I told
juxtaposie, Come Out and Play has been the boys' anthem in my head for FOREVER. Right Now, for all its pop punkiness, is just a fun song, come on guys. Also, it's totally the boys teasing the girls, really. The j-pop/rock songs are just neat battle scenes! Evolution specifically plays out a very particular way in my head; Boomer and Butch are all that first verse, the call goes in to the girls between that and the second, Brick makes his EPIC APPEARANCE in the middle of the chorus, and then there's more fighting and more of me generally being nerdy. Ahem.
So in lieu of this post... anybody else got definitive couple songs? :D Come out and be nerdy with me!
