I don't like this very much.

Just exercising the writing bones. Wanted to do a Buttercup reflecting on Ace piece that tried to turn into a Buttercup reflecting on the Professor piece that tried to turn into something bigger but I didn't want it to so I just kept it that first thing. Anyway, pretty much totally fucking rejected.

The problem with Ace was that he didn't fight.

Well, one of many. There was also the lying, the attempt to kill her sisters, the manipulation of her five year old self which only further infuriated her the older she grew... none of those things made for choice boyfriend material, exactly. But those were things that the world recognized collectively as bad traits.

Not everyone needed a fighter. Not everyone wanted a fighter.

Buttercup needed someone who could fight, even when he was in the wrong, even if he was going to lose. It wasn't about winning or being right; it was about standing up for himself. Ace had cowered behind his friends, had even tried to pass the blame off onto them when the chips were down. His cowardice had disgusted her. If it hadn't been for all those other things he'd done, he wouldn't even have been worth the punch.

She thinks of Ace now as she grows older not out of romantic nostalgia, but because boys everywhere are starting to make their presence known, mostly indirectly. She finds herself staring occasionally, her subconscious doing some mental evaluation every time, like there's some standard checklist it's going through that she isn't even aware of. But when it comes to the approach she loses interest. And despite not knowing the contents of her mysterious mental checklist, she does know one thing for sure: not a single one has yet to qualify.

Some might call it petty. Buttercup just considers it good time management. Especially when she takes her Kindergarten self's brief brush with almost-romance into consideration.

Ace did not stand up for himself when he faced her. He didn't even make the effort. And if you couldn't make the effort for yourself...

Buttercup needs a man who will fight because she needs a man who will fight for her. Not because she needs the help. Not because she can't do it on her own. But because she needs to know that when the chips are down, and everything's going wrong, and losing is too close a reality... she won't be going down alone.
