Another GD meme

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] alicornmoon, idea to plug nearly every damn thing (or at least the last ten) I've written in there ganked from [livejournal.com profile] bookshop.

The meme

Strength - I write like JKR
The Things That Stay With You, Little Boxes, Black Lace and Arsenic, In That Order, Losers Go to Cabo, BKS ch2, half of nearly everything else I dropped in from TEF - I write like Stephen King
The last Reds drabble I did - I write like Kurt Vonnegut (neat!)
Something Stupid, Concessions, The last part of the second chapter of TEF/More Than Human, the other half of nearly everything else I dropped in from TEF - I write like Chuck Palahniuk (totally makes sense for that part of TEF ch2)
Secret Santa - I write like Vladimir Nabokov
The Very Definition of Underestimating Someone - I write like George Orwell (OAO did not see that coming)
The second part of the first chapter of TEF/More Than Human - I write like J. D. Salinger
Remember this (note to self) - I write like H. P. Lovecraft
This last entry - I write like Shakespeare (BULLSHIT)
This other last entry - I write like Margaret Atwood
The first part of the first chapter of TEF/More Than Human - I write like Dan Brown (dying, oh God dying *stabs self* orz)

Mostly I was trying to see how many different writers I could get. 11, as it turns out. Though I'm curious as to how their algorithm-doohicky-majigger works. (Shakespeare? I mean, WTF.)

Still recovering from Dan Brown, what a blow to my pride

Although at least he only showed up once, thank God

What is Dan Brown's style even called?

[identity profile] essbeejay.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Terrible! Amateurish! Whatever it is, I suspect it would involve a lot of italics! And exclamation points!

[identity profile] wei-chan.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I apparently write like Stephen King...in, like, everything.

Except for my Harry Potter one-shot -- I write like JKR in that one. Go figure.

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2010-07-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh..I thought his writing was more on the Michael Crichton side of things (aka long and boring college class details)..*has never actually read Dan Brown in detail*

[identity profile] essbeejay.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I remember liking the two Michael Crichton books I read (Jurassic Park, predictably, and Rising Sun), but those were also in my early teens and I don't remember much about the style. Perhaps he's similar to Dan Brown in the way that actual scientists take offense to Crichton's science, and historians take offense to Brown's history?

Most of the "modern" fic writers seem to be getting Stephen King and/or Chuck Palahniuk. I really wonder what kind of parameters the meme is operating under.

Except for my Harry Potter one-shot -- I write like JKR in that one. Awesome! Emulating the style of origin; that should be a sound compliment :D

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much the actual details that I dislike, just that he had to be so dry about it. I like when writing has a bit more life and personally :3 Not so much when it is like a textbook...Of course some textbooks can be fun but...

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Modern fic? O.o Are we founding a movement :O?

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
*read 1984 and Animal Farm in her early teens of her own free will and was thinking 'What's so important about the year after I was born? XD'*

[identity profile] wei-chan.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I wished they would give an explanation as why they picked a certain author, rather than just going, "I write like...(insert author's name)". Makes me question their analysis.

And yeah, I was rather pleased I could copy JKR's writing style while I was writing a fic for her original series :)

I love your writing, and I love Stephen King, but there is no similarity AT ALL between the works this machine connected with him and his writings.

I'm pretty sure they only use one algorithm, and that it amounts to "randomize."

[identity profile] the-audren-file.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I am so doing this meme, even if there's no real explanation as to why/what makes my style like Author "X." Distractions severely needed @3@

I've never read Dan Brown, is he that terrible?

[identity profile] aerodactylus.livejournal.com 2010-07-14 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
*pats* I got Dan Brown, too. Discouragingly, it was on the first part of an Avatar historical AU I'm working on now...I feel like I've failed fundamentally in my writing.

Kudos to you for getting a bunch of famous authors!

I keep getting Cory Doctorow and David Foster Wallace for my fan-fics. But my favorite chapters of Unbridled and 30 Days got Stephen King. And I apparently blog like HP Lovecraft.

I was thinking they were doing it by word count or something. And possibly by the amount of curse words/"violent" words (for King and Palahniuk, anyway).

[identity profile] essbeejay.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read Dan Brown in any long form whatsoever, but excerpts I've read... his style just does nothing for me.

From opinions of people whose taste I trust, his work falls under the category of definite page-turners - even when my s.o. was appalled by the quality of the writing it was impossible for him to put it down. I keep thinking maybe one day I'll read it just to see what all the blathering was about, but there's so many other items on my list I'd much rather read, it's only a distant possibility that I'll ever get around to it.
