How fitting that I happen to have an appropriate icon, considering the topic of this entry.
HEY REMEMBER THIS THING?
Day 13 → A fictional book

I first read Adams' Watership Down in college (yes, it took me that long). I think I may have actually skipped a class in order to finish it; it was that good. It's an odd choice for me because it's a very plotted book, and I tend to give off the impression that character is the only thing that matters to me... which, granted, isn't far from the truth. But Watership Down also features really strong characters and a world that is so wonderfully established and a narrative that is so solidly plotted and engaging that it becomes impossible to set it down. And it's about bunnies. (Well, rabbits, but you get my meaning.)
I have a lot of trouble citing exactly what it is that I love about this book, but it seriously is one of those stories that utterly sucked me in to the point where I came this close to shunning sleep and food (and succeeded in shunning class), and no book had done that for me since I was a little kid. I just got so into it. It's so suspenseful and there's such a genuine sense of urgency and danger that you really, truly run the gamut of emotions from A to Z throughout the entire book. It helps that Adams is extremely adept at writing some very movie poster-worthy taglines that never fail to send chills down my spine.
AAGH. AAGH. THIS, THIS BOOK IS INCREDIBLE. One of those stories that's constructed to make you feel totally inadequate as a writer. Really, just read it if you haven't. It really is outstanding storytelling. (If you opt to see the movie, still read the book first, because the movie? IS ONE GIANT FUCKING BALL OF NIGHTMARE FUEL. Good in its own way, but you'll basically spend the whole film with your face in a permanent expression of AAAAAAAGH ~~~~~~DDDD8)))) and I wouldn't be surprised if it scared several people off the book.)
For those of you who've read the book (relatively spoiler-free/meaningless to those of you who haven't)... Bigwig's "You Shall Not Pass" moment... I have never thrilled so much to such a simple, muted line. Seriously, I read that scene over like five times with that stupid kid-who-just-had-their-fucking-mind-BLOWN-look on my face THE FIRST TIME. Fuck me, Bigwig is a badass.
Also, did I mention? BUNNIES. (Rabbits. Whatever.)

All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you...

This book. I don't even have words. I cried a lot, at a time in my life when books didn't usually make me cry (now it seems like every damn thing I read makes me sob). My daddy read it to us once when I was very little, and I've since read it myself a half dozen times. Rereading things isn't something I usually do, but this. Guh! No words!
Also, Bigwig is a BAMF. I always had a soft spot for

After I read this book I was like "I AM GOING TO GET A DOZEN RABBITS AND ALL OF THEM WILL BE NAMED BIGWIG." Yeah, I'm a child.
