What the hell.

She took a deep breath, then floated to his lane. He shot a glance over his shoulder at her, suspicion etched in his entire expression, along with something else.

Curiosity, maybe.

She had to reach past him for a candy bar and may have drifted a little too close, but not close enough to actually touch him. He angled his head vaguely towards her, watching her in his peripherals. She backed up and tossed the chocolate on the conveyor belt.

Brick stared at it for a second, then grabbed the bar to separate their purchases and plunked it down.

“Thank you,” she said, wondering if she should take that as a hint.

“Don’t mention it.”

His turn came up and he pulled out his wallet. Blossom eyed the nutrition label on one of the boxes of cereal he was buying. The line was piling up behind her now; they were opening the register one lane over and the cashier waved her over.

She turned and smiled at the person behind her. “Go ahead.” She felt Brick’s eyes on her again, but when she turned back he had grabbed his bags and was leaving the lane.

“Do you have your membership card?” the cashier asked.

“No,” Blossom said dimly, watching him exit the store.

“Do you want to sign up? It’s free.”

“No, I just forgot mine,” she lied. He had paused and was lingering.

“What about your phone number? If you enter your phone number—”

“Forget it, it’s one piece of candy,” Blossom said, throwing a five on the counter and snatching up her purchase before any more of her time could be wasted. Minutes were precious, brains worked in units of milliseconds, and if this took any longer her head would talk herself out of it.

By some miracle—or maybe some mass delusion they were simultaneously experiencing—he was still there. He lifted his eyes from his phone—the screen blank, she noted—to meet hers.

“Hey,” she said, clearing her throat a bit.

“Hey.” He pocketed his phone. “Need something?”

She had to suppress a laugh at the unintentional weightiness of the question. The entire world had changed and she was slowly suffocating in it.

I just want to do something. Anything. Anything different than this.

She pulled her gaze from him, unwilling to say it, and stared at the candy in her hands. Inspiration struck.

Anything.

Blossom looked back at him and held up the candy bar. “Would you help me carry this home?”

He huffed a breath that sounded like a snicker, his eyes pinching a bit. She stared levelly at him, thinking about the last time she’d been close enough to hear his breath hissing between his teeth, how the curve of his mouth had softened in her moonlit bedroom with her knee between his legs.

Now in daylight she watched it soften again.

“Sure,” he said.

The world around her changed, almost imperceptibly. Blossom floated closer to Brick, never once pulling her eyes from his, and slipped the bar of chocolate into his bag.

As far as chocolate goes I've really been into Krackels lately. Something about the texture of crispy rice chocolate bars hits the spot for me. I'm not sure what Blossom would be into? Probably dark chocolate, I can see her complaining that otherwise it's too sweet. Brick would probably mainline everything honestly. Anyone else got chocolate bar prefs?

one of my favorite chocolates is Carlos V from Mexico. It somehow always tastes warm.
